Papkuilsfontein road resurfacing project set to resume soon

"The site establishment was conducted on January 15 and soon thereafter the actual construction will take place"

As the months and years pass by, the main road leading to Papkuilsfontein gets worse. In 2016, the local municipality embarked on a project to resurface this road, which was scarred with potholes. Residents welcomed this initiative and hoped to see the project progress.

However, their joy was short-lived as days turned into months and months into years and there was no positive progression. Initially, in May 2016, the municipality said that a shortage of shortage of asphalt or ‘hot mix’ in KwaZulu-Natal had contributed to the delay but soon, it was evident that this was not the only stumbling block.

In August last year, Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality said that the road rehabilitation is still on the maintenance plan.

“The Papkuilsfontein main road will be done as soon as internal matters have been resolved. This road is not part of the Municipal Infrastructure Grants (MIG) Projects. The initial plan was that it will be done internally by the civil maintenance team,” said Communications Manager Sphelele Zikalala.

The latter part of 2017 passed by without any work being done on the road, so the Estcourt News again asked the municipality about their plans for the deteriorating road.

Assurances that the road would be repaired this year have been received again.

“The Papkuilsfontein road resurfacing will be attended to this financial year. It is now under the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) programme. The contract was handed over in December. The site establishment was conducted on January 15 and soon thereafter the actual construction will take place,” explained Ms Zikalala.
