The KZN Department of Human Settlements, led by MEC Mr Ravi Pillay and in careful consultation with Alfred Duma Local Municipality, has appointed an implementing agent to repair and rebuild the homes that were affected by the storm on December 9, 2012.
The implementing agent Tswara Thebe has been awarded a 24-month contract to repair the homes as per the assessment done previously.
Mayor Vincent Madlala visited Steadville Area J on January 17, and Tsakane and Limit Hill on January 18, followed by his last visit to Acaciavale on Friday, January 19, to introduce the contractor to the various communities.
Speaking at the meeting, the mayor stressed that the repair system will be assisting only those individuals who were affected and cannot afford to have their homes repaired. The affected areas are listed as: Modelkloof, Limit Hill, Steadville Area J and Acaciavale.
He also urged the community to please report any theft or wrongdoing and work with the contractor in order for the project to be a success.
A total of 2200 houses will be repaired.
Alfred Duma Local Municipality would like to stress that no funds allocated to the Storm Damage Project are being withheld by the municipality. All monies are kept and are being monitored by the Department of Human Settlements; Provincial Human Settlements.
Community members are also advised that there will be no reimbursement for those who have already repaired their homes.
