Must see: Mud and silt clog up water plant, leaving residents without water for days

uThukela say the rain last night slowed down the work, as more silt has come down the river

Residents are still without water in various parts of Ladysmith due to the maintenance work being conducted at the Ezakheni Water Treatment Plant.

uThukela say the rain last night slowed down the work, as more silt has come down the river.

This has caused a large build-up of mud in the clarifiers and filters at the plant.

Deputy Water Services Manager Glen Singh commented that workers toiled tirelessly into the early hours of this morning (February 1) and throughout today to try and get water back to residents.

He added that they still have more than 12 hours of work ahead of them to get the plant clean. Then it has to be filled up with water, which will take several more hours.

Workers can be seen wading through knee-deep mud as they try to remove it.

The following areas are affected by the water shutdown: Ezakheni (A, B, C, D and E), the entire Acaciavale, and Steadville (lower lying areas – Nhlanzini, New Stands, 770, Tsakane and Umbulwane).

Water is likely to be back in Acaciavale tomorrow (Friday, February 2). Water supply in Ezakheni will possibly be restored on Saturday or even Sunday.
