Heavy rains flood the streets of Estcourt

Previously the municipality had undertaken a clean-up of the gutters and drains, however this solution was short lived as the next rain washed the debris, heaped on the roadside, back into the gutter

Torrential rains during the past days brought flooding to some streets in and around Estcourt.

The usual suspects – Alfred Street, the Princess Park Bridge and Papkuilsfontein road were again submerged in rain. In most cases, blocked storm water drains are the root cause of the road flooding.

Referring to the flooded road in Papkuilsfontein, the Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality says that this is a ‘serious case’ and needs to be addressed by Uthukela District Municipality.

The local municipality said that the district municipality would have to consider installing a larger diameter pipe in this road. The district municipality responded by saying that silt and litter causes the blockages to the storm water manholes and pipes and installing a larger diameter pipe will not stop the silt and littering and the storm water manholes.

Previously the municipality had undertaken a clean-up of the gutters and drains, however this solution was short lived as the next rain washed the debris, heaped on the roadside, back into the gutter.

In the most recent press release responding to questions about the repair of this road, Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality Communications Manager Sphelele Zikalala said that intervention from Uthukela District Municipality was vital in resolving the road flooding.

“One household needs to remove their boundary wall, which encroaches the blocked storm water pipe that has to be attended to,” added Ms Zikalala. She gave no indication as to when this will be done.
