PREVIEW: Tension builds over damages to Newcastle Library

Sparks flew in local council last Wednesday, following a motion on damages to Newcastle Library by DA councillor, Bertie Meiring.

Sparks flew in local council on Wednesday last week, over damages to Newcastle Library.

DA councillor, Bertie Meiring made a motion during this meeting.

In it, he demanded an investigation into costs of damage to the library structure over the Christmas holidays.

So-called unplanned work left books and equipment in ruin.

Cllr Meiring noted this damage and the inconvenience caused to residents.

He called on leadership to ensure no further costs were borne by the town.

Mayor, Makhosini Nkosi agreed the motion was appropriate.

However, he was less than impressed with Cllr Meiring’s comments in the Newcastle Advertiser in early January.

At that point, Cllr Meiring accused ANC officials of not prioritising education.
