It was a rather interesting and productive week for Newcastle Public Order Policing (POP) Unit, as they arrested seven suspects for being in possession of drugs, firearms and live ammunition.
According to Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Officer, Captain Jabulani Ncube, the arrests were made during Crime Combating Duties in oSizweni and surrounding areas.

The first arrest was made on Sunday, February 18 by Warrant Officer S.S. Zulu, Sergeant S.T. Nzima, and Constables, M.P. Madide and P.G. Zuma.
“These members arrested a 19-year-old suspect at oSizweni Section E for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” he said.
Later that evening, SAPS then arrested a 20-year-old suspect in oSizweni, near the Mzizi Tavern for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.
“The suspect was found in possession of a Browning pistol and a magazine loaded with five rounds of live ammunition.”
The next five suspects were arrested on Monday, February 19 by the same members, while continuing with Crime Combating Duties.
During the course of the evening, members arrested the five suspects for the following offences:
– An 18-year-old suspect was arrested for being in possession of three match boxes containing dry loose dagga.
– A 19-year-old suspect was arrested for being in possession of a quarter tablet of Star Mandrax.
– A 27-year-old suspect was arrested for being in possession of three match boxes containing dry loose dagga.
– A 31-year-old suspect was arrested for being in possession of a quarter Mandrax tablet.
– A 38-year-old suspect was arrested for being in possession of three packets of dagga.
