Update: Suspect appears in court for Lasec educator Mrs Chetty’s death
Family and friends were present in court to see if justice prevails
Mr Yudesvan “Joey” Govender appeared in the Ladysmith Court yesterday (March 20) for sentencing related to the death of Ladysmith Secondary School (Lasec) educator and HOD Mrs Kalai Chetty. Mrs Chetty was knocked down and killed on Monday, July 21, 2014.
The case was remanded to Friday (March 23) for sentencing.
Family and friends were present in court to see if justice prevails in this case.
Suspect Mr Govender was found guilty on all counts he was facing in the Estcourt Regional Court on Friday, February 2.
Upon hearing the court verdict in February, husband Mr Logan Chetty said, “We are relieved that justice has finally been served. We have lived in agony for close to four years and now we can find some sort of closure to the tragic incident.”

On that fateful Monday in July 2014, Mrs Chetty was walking with a long-time friend and fellow educator, and allegedly turned a second before being hit by the car. Her friend managed to step out of the way split-seconds before it struck.
The friend was treated for shock by paramedics at the scene. She managed to identify the vehicle and its owner.
The driver of the vehicle linked to the hit ‘n run accident that killed the prominent Lasec HOD was arrested at his home shortly after her death. According to initial reports, the driver claimed he was unaware that he had hit anyone.
Mrs Chetty’s death sent shock waves through the Ladysmith community at the time.
