In an interview with a family member of Mrs Kalai Chetty after the sentencing of the suspect in the case, they expressed outrage at the sentence, as they expected much more from the justice system.
Suspect Mr Yudesvan “Joey” Govender appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Friday morning for sentencing in the death of Mrs Kalai Chetty.
Mrs Chetty, who was an educator and Head of Department (HOD) at Ladysmith Secondary School (Lasec), was knocked down and killed on Monday, July 21, 2014. She was walking with a long-time friend and fellow educator, and allegedly turned a second before being hit by the car.

The driver of the vehicle linked to the hit ‘n run accident that killed the prominent Lasec HOD was arrested at his home shortly after her death.
Mrs Chetty’s death sent shock waves through the Ladysmith community at the time, and many people have been eagerly awaiting the sentencing in this case.
Here is the sentencing:
– On the main charge of culpable homicide, he was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment, suspended for 5 years.
– 3 years’ correctional supervision. Community service for a period of 16 hours a month for the full duration of the sentence.
– On the three other counts, he was fined R5000 each or 12 months’ imprisonment.
