Fair-goers walk through effluent as blocked sewer is not fixed

"This is an embarrassment to Ladysmith and tells us that the ruling party does not care"

Fair-goers were disgusted at having to walk through raw sewage on Sunday due to a blocked sewer at the entrance to where the April Fools’ Fair was hosted in Quality Street.

According to Councillor Abbas Warasally of the IFP, who was present at the event, “I reported a major blocked sewer at the entrance two months ago. On March 31, I met with uThukela at the site and explained that there was going to be an event held at the location and that hundreds of ratepayers and visitors from out of town would be attending. uThukela reassured me it would be solved.”

However, it was not fixed and those who attended the event were forced to walk through the sewer water.

“This is an embarrassment to Ladysmith and tells us that the ruling party does not care. To make matters worse, the sewage runs back into the Klip River via the storm-water drains,” added Cllr Warasally.

Commenting on the matter, uThukela spokesperson Jabulani Mkhonza said they always urge their customers to report water and sewer-related queries to their call centre on 0860102457 so that those reporting will be issued with a reference number.

He added that reporting to a councillor or having a councillor report the issue does not help them in any way, as a councillor is not an employee of uThukela District Municipality.

“We encourage people to use the correct channels when reporting water and sewer-related issues so they can be attended to quickly,” concluded Mkhonza.
