Busy time at Sam-Lyn Edu Centre in Weenen
A further new development has been a dedicated computer that has been donated by Treverton Schools
The first term of the year flew by and was another extremely busy, but rewarding, fulfilling and enriching time at Sam-Lyn in Weenen. The core focus for the term was, once again, the uplifting of English literacy skills for groups of pupils from two of the local schools.

Excitement has been palpable as learners have been exposed to many and varied activities in an attempt to attain relevant goals. Two new computer programmes focusing on the basics of English have been a “hit” and progress is already being seen in a number of the children.
Sets of amazing card games – developed by a KZN specialist – are being used to teach and cement the basics. Reading and comprehension have remained central to all activities alongside drama.

A further new development has been a dedicated computer that has been donated by Treverton Schools. This enables internet access especially for the high school learners needing to do assignments. This is proving to be of great assistance to them.
Two ex-pupils, Nkosi Mchunu and Neliswa Lamula who were previously at the centre have returned as volunteers to assist the high school learners with their tasks. Paddock Playschool – under the auspices of Sam-Lyn – has grown from strength-to-strength and is now full.
The “littlies” can be heard excitedly going about their day learning all kinds of wonderful things under the professional guidance of Tracy Usher-Jones and Yolanda Sibisi.
Over the past months, and thanks to contributions of, inter alia The Stretch Foundation, Treverton Preparatory School and Sam-Lyn, a library will be opened at Kopleegte Primary School on April 14. Much hard work has gone into this project and it is amazing to see that it has now come to fruition.

This facility will grant the children the opportunity of interacting with books and the printed word and will undoubtedly assist in their overall development.
