Breaking News: Truck hijacked at ‘protest barrier’ along Helpmekaar Road (Video Included)

When the driver stopped, it is alleged that he was confronted by a group of people who appeared at the roadside

A truck was hijacked this morning (April 20) along Helpmekaar Road.

It is believed that the truck had to stop due to the road being blocked by rocks and branches put there by protesters who are demanding electricity in the area.

When the driver stopped, it is alleged that he was confronted by a group of people who appeared at the roadside. They banged on the windows and demanded that the driver exit the truck.

The group of people then took control of the truck, driving it through the section of road that is blocked off.

The vehicle came to a halt further down the road, with the hijackers grabbing what they could take and fleeing into the bushes.

The truck was carrying groceries.

Police, including Ladysmith K9 Unit officers, responded to the scene.

The truck driver did not sustain any injuries.

A manhunt for the suspects was launched, with some of the stolen items being recovered by police in the bushes at the side of the road.

Mayor Vincent Madlala, who was in the area attending to the service delivery protest, also went to the scene of the hijacking.

No arrests have been made as yet.
