A high school love triangle turned almost fatal for two learners from Wembezi when they were stabbed and assaulted by fellow learners.

This scene unfolded at a school in Wembezi in March last year. 20-year-old Somo Zuma and 19-year-old Nkosithemba Dlamini approached two learners aged 17 and 21 and stabbed and severely assaulted them.

Police believe that the violence was triggered by a love triangle gone wrong.

The two Wembezi learners were arrested and the charges against them were attempted murder and assault to do grievous bodily harm.

More than a year later, the case wrapped up in the Estcourt Regional Court on April 5. Both young men were convicted of attempted murder.

Somo Zuma was sentenced to eight years imprisonment while Nkosithemba Dlamini was sentenced to six years imprisonment.

Police spokesperson Captain Bongani Nyathi said that he hoped these convictions and sentences will dissuade further violence at school level.

“Police in the Uthukela Cluster hope that the stiff sentences that have been handed down will be a deterrent to learners who intend on carrying dangerous weapons and fighting at school,” said Captain Nyathi.
