Loud bangs that sounded like gunfire echoed through Murchison Street this morning (May 8).

However, it was in fact not gunshots, but police using stun grenades to disperse protesting TVET students who had taken to the streets.

One person commented that he was shopping at a nearby shopping centre and was terrified when he heard what sounded like gunshots going off not too far away.

Going into Murchison Street, he saw the chaos and told a Ladysmith Gazette journalist that he saw the police arresting some of the protesters.
