Majuba College students learn about democratic rights
The IEC was there to ensure that voter education is enhanced and that more young people realise the need to be active participants in the formation of democratic South Africa
The Department of Communication and Information Systems led a successful lecture on democratic South Africa and the constitutional development during Freedom Month, as part of government response to continue advocating for school freedom.
The lecture was to ensure that tertiary students fully participate in the democratic affairs of the country and become informed about the present issues that affect our democratic state versus the constitutional development. South Africa is one of the youngest democracies in the world.

GCIS coordinated Legal AID South Africa and Independent Electoral Commission to be part of the engagement to strengthen democratic education and constitutional development of South Africa. Nompulelelo Sithole from Legal AID SA said: “Young people’s influence and democratic education explore the teaching of democracy in school.” In particular, it relates to young peoples’ responses and initiatives to change in formal education she added. She advised students about the legal obligations that they should fulfill while at tertiary without forgetting their responsibilities to be law-abiding citizens.

Majuba College students were delighted to be addressed about their role in the election process. Miss Moloi, a representative from IEC, said that “students must go all out and register to vote. They must also update their current residing addresses for the upcoming 2019 general elections”.
In closing the discussion, Nomzamo Zondi from GCIS, encouraged young people to use government information services to enrich themselves with the knowledge to better their lives.
