Klein Spoortjies crochets a warmer winter for Huis Johanna Old Age Home
After hearing of the dire financial circumstances of Huis Johanna Home for the Aged, Marti decided to initiate the blanket drive.
When it comes to being a community-driven school, Klein Spoortjies Pre-Primary prides itself on being first in line.
Being a vital member of the SAWF (South African Women’s Federation), Principal Marti van Zyl said she firmly believed in teaching her school the importance of giving back to the community.
“The children in this school are taught the importance of helping those in need, and I must say I am blessed with amazing learners, staff and even parents as they are always on board when it comes to charity work.”
The most recent project being undertaken by Marti and her school is a winter blanket drive for the elderly at Huis Johanna in Utrecht.
After hearing of the dire financial circumstances of Huis Johanna Home for the Aged, Marti decided to initiate the blanket drive.

She plans on donating 44 handmade-blankets, as well as winter clothing, toiletries and gift bags containing sweet treats and other essentials.
“My aim is to put together a special gift pack for each individual there, making them feel special and loved.”
Marti said after hearing of the situation at Huis Johanna, she immediately contacted the SAWF and requested to take on the home as a personal project.
The plan was to have the gifts ready by the end of May, when the school would then hand over the packages to the recipients at the home.
“We will have our Dancing Dollies and Junior Orchestra accompany us to the home, where they will perform a small concert for the elderly prior to the handover,” she said.
So far, Marti has managed to obtain 23 handmade-blankets, which just proved to her what a caring community the residents of Newcastle are.
“I was completely caught off-guard with the response from members of our community. They opened their hearts to the project and they have most certainly shown me that we are a community who cares for others.”
She also thanked her staff, learners and their parents for already contributing towards the project.

“I am blessed to say that I can always count on them,” she said.
However, the need is still there for the rest of the blankets, clothes and other goodies.
Marti is now asking the community of Newcastle to further assist the school with the remainder of the items needed to ensure a warmer winter.
“My aim with this drive is to make a difference in the lives of these people. To make them feel special and to let them know they are loved and they have not been forgotten.”
The drop-off point for all hand-made knitted or crochet blankets is at Klein Spoortjies, which is situated at 96 Bird Street.
