VIDEO: ‘Disabled’ was just a word to Vryheid legend, Vicky Delport

From his outstanding work as the official 'Disabled Representative' for Ward 9 in AbaQulusi, to his motivational manner in the gym that he owned, Vicky Delport will be fondly remembered as a Vryheid legend for the countless lives that he touched.

It was a very sad day for many community members that went out to say their final goodbyes to Vryheid’s stalwart Vicky Delport.

Condolences have been pouring in since the passing of one of Vryheid’s greatest treasures, Vicky Delport, on Sunday morning, May 13.

 

‘Oom Vic’, as he was affectionately known by most, was an inspiration to the entire community in so many ways. From his outstanding work as the official ‘Disabled Representative’ for Ward 9 in AbaQulusi, to his motivational manner in the gym that he owned and actively ran for so many years, Vicky Delport will be fondly remembered as a Vryheid legend for the countless lives that he touched. At the age of 36, only six weeks after his wedding day, Vicky Delport sustained a life-changing injury during a rugby match, playing for Vryheid Rugby Club at the time, that left him permanently disabled. But, to Vicky Delport, ‘disabled’ was only a word and his own disability was never a hindrance when it came to getting the job done to make a difference in the lives of others.

And what a difference he made. On so many levels, the man with a heart of gold inspired people to be better versions of themselves, whether it was in his gym, where he actively motivated members, pushing them to their limits to achieve the perfect transformation, or throughout the community, where he was appointed as the official Disabled Representative for Ward 9, rallying the support of AbaQulusi to get behind disabled members of society and improve their quality of life, Vicky Delport’s heartwarming smile will be remembered, his words of encouragement and inspiration will continue to echo in the hearts and minds of all who knew him and his memory will live on.

Vicky Delport passed away on May 13, approximately a week after undergoing an operation. The operation was a success, but sadly, Vicky contracted a lung infection that saw the man who had become so well known to breathing life into others, being kept alive by a respirator.
