Possible load-shedding on the cards for Ladysmith

Residents and businesses are urged to use electricity sparingly by switching off geysers during the day, especially during peak periods

Residents are warned that the power system remains constrained and the public is urged to lower their usage during peak times.

Load-shedding has been on the cards since last week Thursday.

Alfred Duma Local Municipality received a notification from Eskom informing them that the power system remains constrained, with the risk of stage 1 and stage 2 load-shedding remaining high for the evening peak (5pm to 9pm) due to shortage of capacity.

The municipality has been managing the load requested by Eskom by requesting industrial customers to contribute to the required load so that load-shedding could be avoided during the evenings.

Residents are encouraged to contribute to this by utilising electricity sparingly by switching off geysers, non-essential lighting, as well as electrical appliances to assist in reducing the demand.

Load-shedding is a last resort measure to protect the power system from a total black-out.

Residents are advised to keep checking their load-shedding schedules on the Eskom as well as the municipality websites and plan on the assumption that load-shedding will take place in the event that it becomes necessary.

Businesses and residents are urged to use electricity sparingly this winter.

Last week, Eskom workers went on strike because their salaries were not increased this year.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), and Solidarity met with Eskom management through the Central Bargaining Forum to re-start wage talks this week.

Employees belonging to the unions have been on strike since last week.
