The children from Sam-Lyn Edu Centre had a real treat when they experienced a simulated aeroplane trip to America and an hour of stories at the end of the week.

The children waited in anticipation as they were ushered to the back entrance of Sam-Lyn Edu Centre. They were then given boarding passes to climb onto an aeroplane.
Due to the cost of a visit to a real airport or anywhere else for that matter, the centre offered something different that would impact the children, outside the confines of a classroom.

The seating inside Sam-Lyn Edu Centre was set up like the seating in an aeroplane. The children entered one at a time and were shown to their seats by the ‘air steward’. They were then told to imagine that the screen in front of them with a Power Point presentation was the screen on the aeroplane.
They fastened their seatbelts for take-off and were given a taste of what it is like travelling in an aeroplane.
The children watched in awe as they were taken through the steps of planning a holiday such as budgeting, passports, how to get there and what clothing to take.
Their trip was to the United States of America and they were shown slides of places of interest in Philadelphia, the Jersey Shore, Washington DC and New York city. They were amazed at the height of the buildings and the size of the pizzas!
They were also served juice and biscuits off a trolley by the ‘air steward’ while watching the Power Point. They were then treated to hot dogs when they disembarked, all very excited at the prospect of flying in a real aeroplane one day!
Friday afternoon saw a group of almost 70 primary school children arrive at the centre for Story Hour.
The children were grouped according to their ages and were read to by the staff or listened to a story on the CD player.

It was a highly successful afternoon, emphasising the decision to prioritise reading in 2018.
Exposing children from rural areas to far more than the environs of the classroom, motivates them not only to work harder but to aspire to greater heights – hence the Sam-Lyn motto – Phuma Phambile!
