Cooking is about more than recipes and food at Ladysmith Secondary School

The learners are enthusiastic and driven to excel, and will be working towards careers in hospitality

Cooking with kids is not just about ingredients and recipes.

It is about harnessing imagination, empowerment and creativity, says Mr Bihaspat, who is an educator at Ladysmith Secondary School (Lasec) in the field of Consumer Studies.

The Grade 12 learners who are engaged in practical and theory lessons will now be formally assessed in their final practical moderation, scheduled for August, in the presence of a prominent, passionate and dynamic subject advisor, Miss RB Xulu.

These learners are busy preparing delicious dishes and interpreting recipes which will demonstrate their culinary and crockery skills, as well as usage of utensils.

Four talented learners have been selected and they are…

Aneesa Seedat, a young and dynamic student with remarkable creativity and multi-tasking ability, has chosen a theme of Valentine’s and will be preparing a Caprese skewer made up of strawberries and cherry tomatoes with feta cheese on a bed of crisp lettuce with honey and mustard dressing, accompanied by a prawn spring roll.

She will also be making grilled spicy prawns and grilled baby tomatoes with red pepper pasta and lastly a strawberry cheesecake with chocolate and cream.

A great chef is always committed to preparing the highest quality meal, as seen by Sunishka Singh.

She seeks out the finest ingredients and uses the best techniques to deliver the best product possible with exceptional taste and she has chosen to undertake an Indian theme consisting of traditional mince samosa with a homemade dip, as well as authentic rich and creamy butter chicken served with roti to tantalise the taste buds of those present and lastly soft and fluffy soji with fresh cream to sweeten the senses.

Sophie Shiluthu has a true passion for cooking induced by physical stamina and always thinks out of the box and has unique and creative ideas.

She has decided to go with a traditional Afrikaans theme, beginning with a tuna layer surprise wedge followed by bobotie with pumpkin fritters and grilled green beans and lastly, to enhance the sweetness, souskoetjies.

The last candidate is Sthembela Mpungose, an ultimate star in aroma, taste and texture in preparation of meals, paying attention to fine detail to incorporate every needed ingredient.

He will be the Italian chef for the day, preparing spicy Italian fish with homemade fries, followed by mandurin lamb chops to engulf your appetite and to add to your sweet tooth an Oreo cheesecake.

The learners are enthusiastic and driven to excel, and will be working towards careers in hospitality.

Special thanks to the parents / guardians of each learner, who have worked hand-in-hand to help the learners at Lasec with their endeavours.

Any interested person or business who would like to make a sponsorship towards the cost and needed equipment to be used in the kitchen can contact Mr Bihaspat on 036-633-3675 or make an appointment.
