A Mandela Day celebration was held on July 18 in honour of the struggle stalwart who became the first black President in South Africa after the apartheid regime was dismantled and replaced by a democratic government in 1994.
The fallen hero would be turning 100 this year. His birthday is commemorated throughout the world.
In South Africa, July is declared as a month of goodwill during which people render their selfless activities and dedicate 67 minutes to help those in need.
Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS) through the Local Task Team (LTT) heeded the call to bring people together on this day with the aim of fighting poverty, inequality and unemployment, as well as to promote peace and reconciliation among the communities.

The Mayor was accompanied by Councillor Mpembe of Ward three, Councillor Ndumo of Ward six and Councillor Dlangalala of Ward two. Mrs Mbele spoke about the importance of education. She emphasised that forced marriages and abduction of school girls must be condemned because it ruins the future of young girls.
