Andante Independent School held their chess championship challenge on Saturday (August 18).
The weather did not dampen the learners’ excitement as they gathered at the school early in the morning.
The children performed exceptionally well.
It was all about strategy and expertly moving the pieces around on the board to get the opposing King into checkmate.
You could hear a pin drop as the young chess masters used the most powerful piece on the board, the Queen, to good effect as they went on the attack.
The learners took the competition very seriously!
The various schools that participated were Monument Primary, Egerton Primary, Andante, ML Sultan Primary, Zakheni Chess Club and St Chad’s Chess Club.
There were a total of 61 aspiring chess masters who competed for their school.
In the end, it was St Chad’s Chess Club that checkmated the rest and showed their prowess.
The highest individual score was achieved by Manasa Gama (St Chad’s), second position Sphelele Hlatshwayo (St
Chad’s) and third position Jhoem Sabangan (Egerton).
The school positions were:
1st – St Chad’s, 2nd – Andante, 3rd – Egerton.
