Cindy van Heusden’s memorial was a celebration of a brave and beautiful soul

"It's a celebration of my life," instructed Cindy. "Please wear bling and bright colours!"

On the morning of her death, on September 14, Cindy van Heusden updated her Facebook status with a post that read, “‘Serious make over’ has now been put on the top of my bucket (list)…”

But anyone who knew the bubbly, vivacious blonde with the sparkling blue eyes, dazzling smile and infectious laugh that could light up an entire room, would most likely agree that the bold and spirited cancer survivor, Cindy Ann van Heusden, fondly referred to by some as ‘Cinderella’, was most likely less in need of a makeover than anyone on the planet.

Able to see a silver lining in every cloud, Cindy remained positive about life, even when confronted with the shock of being diagnosed with aggressive stage three cancer in 2015, after her injuries from an attempted mugging, revealed her underlying condition and a startling reality that would have devastated most.

Cindy fought courageously against the disease and maintained a positive attitude throughout, but the cancer eventually came back with a vengeance and, on the sad and mournful Friday of September 14, she lost her battle.

Cindy’s daughter, Kim du Toit, wrote on social media in memory of her mother, “12 July 1967 a legend was born… this legend left four more legends to carry on her legacy… we will do you proud, mommy…”

A memorial service was held at the NG SuidOos Kerk on September 21 at 11am and, as per Cindy’s instructions, it was not to be a sorrowful event as her family and friends are invited to gather in celebration of a beautiful life well-lived.

“It’s a celebration of my life,” instructed Cindy. “Please wear bling and bright colours!”

Following the service, guests were invited to attend a further celebration at Vryheid Country Club in Cindy’s honour.
