Preservation of water is a subject that should come naturally to everyone.

Therefore, it is worrying when rampant water wastage is reported, ignored, reported and of course … ignored again.
This is the fate of the Shaik family in Sixth Avenue.

Millions of litres of water have been unnecessarily wasted due to a neglected leak inside the family’s yard.
The leak however, is not their onus.

The leaking pipe belongs to water service provider Uthukela District Municipality and has been leaking since June last year. The sound of gushing water is audible from more than three meters away and as Shamima Shaik leads a reporter from the Estcourt News to the leak site, the look of disappointment mingled with desperation is evident on her face.

“I have tried all avenues to get this leak repaired,” explains Mrs Shaik.

“I’ve called Uthukela District Municipality and spoke to the staff members. They have confirmed that the leak is their responsibility. I have also notified the Ward Councillor who came to have a look and also promised that the leak would be repaired, but there was no repair,” she continued.

Mrs Khan has tried to somewhat remedy the situation and attached plastic bags to the leak, in the hope that it would stem the flow, but this has not helped either.

Her biggest concern is the vast amounts of clean fresh water that is literally going down the drain.

“This is such a waste,” she says regretfully.

The Estcourt News has informed the district municipality’s communication department of the Shaik family’s concerns. A response is anticipated.
