St Gregory learners take a trip back in time

The Msunduzi Museum brought the rich South African history to life, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all

On September 26, the St Gregory grade threes visited the Msunduzi Museum in Pietermaritzburg. Upon arrival the learners were given a presentation about the Voortrekkers.

The grade threes listened attentively while they were shown artefacts such as clothing, toys, tools, weaponry, and even got to touch and smell an original soap bar – a vastly different smell to what they are accustomed to!

Thereafter they learned about the Zulu culture and some of its history – from Shaka Zulu’s rule to Dingaan’s fall and how their stories are intertwined with that of the Voortrekkers’. The learners were then taken to view various collections showcasing more of South Africa’s cultures and history.

The learners explore some of the collections at the museum.

Highlights included King Dingaan’s chair; artefacts found after the Battle of Blood River; an ox wagon used by the Voortrekkers and a tour though a replica of Voortrekkerhuisie – one of the oldest houses built in Pietermaritzburg.
