While animals feast on strewn rubbish, Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality has still not given any indication about the current status of refuse removal.
The past weeks have been fraught with tension as residents endure the unsightly mess. In most residential areas in Estcourt, waste removal is either delayed or municipal workers heap refuse bags at one point (usually in front of a resident’s driveway) and the waste is either scattered by passing animals and people or at times left to lie there for days.

In Wembezi, a resident reports that the refuse in all areas has not been collected for three weeks. Living in this squalor is frustrating locals.
The local municipality was questioned more than a week ago about the intermittent refuse removal, the state of the refuse collection trucks as well as to when residents can expect the familiar routine.

The wait for consistent refuse removal continues
On Monday afternoon, Municipal Manager Mr PS Mkhize said that both refuse compactors are undergoing repairs with hopes that one of them may be repaired by November 2.
“We have also developed a new strategy where each refuse compactor will now be allocated to one driver. “This will assist in ensuring proper management, accountability and also reduce the current challenge of equipment breakdown. It is a fact that our refuse compactors have reached their lifespan, it is however believed that our plan of action will also assist to respond to the current challenge, since we are not yet in a position procure new equipment,” explained Mr Mkhize.
