The grade six class of St Gregory Primary School went to Glenrock Game and Trout Farm in Mooi River for their leadership camp. A very excited bus left Estcourt on October 10.

The group started the day with a zip-line across the dam – a favourite activity for most. Some group dynamics followed, before sitting down to a scrumptious lunch. Afterwards the learners walked through the gorgeous countryside to the local dairy. For dinner, the learners were split into three groups. They had to bid for ingredients and then cook potjiekos.

Their cooking skills impressed the educators and facilitators alike. The day ended with a night walk where learners had the opportunity to learn about the stars of the Milky Way. A quick game of ‘stalk the lantern’ ensured that the group were tired out and ready for bed. After a delicious breakfast, the group made their way to the tree rock climbing. Most learners were able to reach the top, overcoming a fear of heights and achieving a goal they did not think they were capable of.

They built on the excitement by completing the obstacle course, encouraging one another at different stations. After lunch, a much-needed visit to the dam was scheduled. Learners were paired up and took to the water in kayaks. Laughter, some nervous, was heard as they raced around a buoy before returning to land. Raft building followed, where two groups needed to build a raft from barrels and logs that would float without breaking.

This tested their problem-solving abilities, leadership and communication skills, patience and group spirit, as many found this task challenging.
