Non-performance leads parking meter system to stall

Although this matter is now sub judice, the municipality is still intent on seeing Newcastle return to metered parking and has begun expediting relevant processes.

Plans to have metered parking active in December have hit a snag.

According to the municipality, Traffic Services has made a submission to terminate the appointment of the service provider due to its non-performance with regards this project.

This is reportedly the result of the company’s ‘financial demise’.

Although this matter is now sub judice, the municipality is still intent on seeing Newcastle return to metered parking and has begun expediting relevant processes.

“However, this can be done only within the prescripts of the Municipal Finance Management Act and the Supply Chain Management regulations.”

In the meantime, the municipality has also lifted the moratorium on filling the positions of meter attendants and additional traffic officials.

A total of 10 traffic warden posts have been filled.

The municipality stated these posts were advertised beforehand and candidates who met the prescribed requirements were shortlisted and invited for interviews.

It is believed filling these posts will have immediate positive effects. “This will mitigate the parking and congestion woes currently being experienced.”
