Sarel athletes impress spectators

Mrs Pretorius, our librarian, will start crochet classes on Tuesday afternoons after school for learners who do not participate in sport but would like to be engaged in some activity.

On Saturday, February 2, 21 athletes from Sarel Cilliers took part in the Umzinyathi athletics trials.
They were fired up and managed to collect 11 gold, three  silver and three bronze medals in outstanding performances. Bandile Mdluli once again proved to be the one to watch when he thundered down the track in the 200m and 100m, leaving the rest of the sprinters in his dust. The crowd went wild and sang and cheered as he crossed the finish line way ahead of the opponents and he collected his two gold medals.

Another sprinter that should be watched is Olwethu Mdinisi who shows great potential in the 100m and 200m sprints. Simpiwe Xaba had the most remarkable improvement overall for someone who has never done discus before and managed to throw well over 19m. Well done to all the athletes!
Other gold medal winners were Sarel Athlete Impresses Spectators, Olwethu Nxumalo – high jump, Dihan Kruger – discus, Lindelwa Mdlalose – discus and shotput, Nikita Ramdayal and Liezel Viljoen – shared first place in long jump and Nontobeko Mathupa – javelin.
Silver medals went to Charné Stoop – discus, for her personal best, Dihan Kruger – shotput, and Joaquin Alant in the discus.
Bronze medals were received by Simphiwe Xaba in the discus, Kylin Swanepoel – javelin, Andiswa Mntakwende – long jump and Bianca Hunlun in shotput.
Grade 8 concert
An exciting new tradition has been created: the grade 8 concert. Prefects, together with the language departments put together a very entertaining concert on January 31. The idea is to expose all the talent in the grade 8 group and to provide a night of fun for all. The prefects stole the spotlight with a well-choreographed dance that had everyone on their feet. Thank you to everyone involved in the play and a special word of thanks to Ms Layland for coordinating everything. We look forward to next year!
Sport against Greytown
Sarel Cilliers (Blue Lions) kicked off the season on a high note by playing against Greytown High School with all the rugby, 1st Netball and 1st Hockey teams. The Netball and Hockey girls played well and won easily with 3/0 (hockey) and 35/6 (netball). The rugby boys also had a good day at the office, winning all their matches. The u/14s won 20/12, u/15s won 37/12, u/16s won 47/5, 2nd won 17/5 and the 1st team won 54/0.
