MEC for Economic Development shuts down illegal businesses in CBD

The MEC cracks down on many illegal operations in Newcastle's CBD.

The MEC for Economic Development Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Sihle Zikalala, made an appearance in Newcastle this morning cracking down on many illegal operations.

Timeline

He first went to a local liquor store and the MEC stated that the store owner is allowing people to drink on the premises – which is illegal.

He gave the store owner a firm final warning, otherwise their licence would be taken away.

Minutes after this discussion, immigration officials – as part of the MEC’s entourage – arrested a Congolese immigrant who has allegedly been working in the same liqour store illegally. The immigrant claims that he works in the salon on the same premises and not in the liqour store.

Then, a crane was brought in to take down some alleged illegal spaza and informal shops – owned by the same liquor store owner.

After all of this, the MEC went to the official opening of the EDTEA Amajuba District office.
