Muddy roads cause residential struggle in oSizweni

A resident of Ward 9 in Longhomes, oSizweni said they have difficulty leaving their homes after heavy rains, as the gravel roads get too muddy.

oSizweni residents say they have been struggling to get roads tarred for a long time.

A resident of Ward 9 in Longhomes, oSizweni said they have difficulty leaving their homes after heavy rains, as the gravel roads get too muddy.

Mr Nxumalo said community members first addressed the problem at a community public meeting held at oSizweni High School in 2017.

“We had a public meeting in 2017 that was attended by then mayor, Makhosini Nkosi. He said he understood our problem and would address it as soon as possible. We waited a long time but nothing happened. We also spoke to the local councillor, Cyril Ngema, who just keeps saying he will attend to the matter. We are tired of hearing the same old responses. We just want to see change.”

Ward 9 Councillor, Cyril Ngema, said he had actually addressed the request.

“I spoke to the residents and I told them that we are busy with road projects at the moment. As we speak we’re constructing the E41 road close to oSizweni High School. From there we will move to Longhomes.

On March 25 we had a meeting with the technical team and the municipality to address this issue. To be honest, all roads need fixing and we can’t do everything all at the same time. The contractor is helping us with the sand and the municipality is helping us with machines.”

Head of Communications for Newcastle Municipality, Dr Dumisani Thabethe, said all matters will be specifically dealt with once the newly elected mayor settles in office.

“We have planned a meeting with the Technical Services team where we will address all roads in Newcastle. We will then communicate on when and which road we will be working, but the issue of roads is being addressed,” confirmed Dr Thabethe.
