Services undelivered at local post office

Concerns regarding the state of the post office were communicated to both the Newcastle Municipality and SAPO on a regional level.

The Ferrax Post Office in Pioneer Park has been compared to a rubbish dump.

Residents have approached the media about the state of the enclosed area of the post office, which is beset by overgrown grass, vagrants and litter.

“It is mostly the elderly who collect post there, and many are too scared to get their post,” says post box owner, Daniel Snyman.

He believes the Ferrax Post Office area should be kept neat, clean and exclusive to post box owners, particularly since residents pay a fee for this service.

Snyman also sees a need for residents to speak out against poor service delivery.

“You can’t even walk there,” he adds, referring to broken bottles scattered about. “I contacted a manager [from the South African Post Office – SAPO], who said they will investigate the matter. That was about a month ago.”

The Newcastle Advertiser spoke with a resident last week, who was collecting her post from the Ferrax Post Office, and she admits her expectations are low.

She was even surprised the grass had been cut.

“There’s broken glass and cigarette butts all over and sometimes children walk here barefoot,” she says.

Concerns regarding the state of the post office were communicated to both the Newcastle Municipality and SAPO on a regional level.

However, neither provided a reply to the questions posed.

It remains uncertain where the jurisdiction of SAPO ends and that of the municipality begins, specifically when it comes to maintenance of the Ferrax Post Office and its immediate surrounds.

For now, this question remains unanswered.
