Taxi council embarks on clean-up campaign

The decision to clean the rank followed a prayer meeting at the SANTACO offices a few weeks ago, by female taxi owners.

The Newcastle Bus and Taxi Rank was given much-needed attention this Worker’s Day (May 1).

The Amajuba District branch of transport forum, the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), embarked on a clean-up campaign of the rank. SANTACO members, dressed in their maroon T-shirts, assembled with the intention to make a difference.

SANTACO said it saw the need to be hands-on with a cleaning initiative, as taxi ranks were where its members worked every day. It further indicated passengers and drivers have had to operate in a dirty environment for a long time.

The decision to clean the rank followed a prayer meeting at the SANTACO offices a few weeks ago, by female taxi owners.

Chairperson of the SANTACO Amajuba Region Women’s Cluster, Thabisile Kunene, said the clean-up was a necessity for the health of the community.

“The rank is the place where we make money, and no one wants to work in a dirty environment. Therefore, it is only right that we clean up the rank ourselves. We urge passengers and drivers to take care of the rank, by making sure it is kept clean and not carelessly littering.

We also ask the municipality to please check on the drainage systems at the rank, because the drains were blocked due to all the litter,” she concluded.
