It was a joyful day for 100 elderly citizens in Ward 26 when they were treated to a Mother’s Day lunch by Kunempilo Foundation, on May 11, at Qapehelani Primary School in Madadeni. They not only enjoyed a good meal but also received winter blankets.

Kunempilo Foundation founder, and a nurse by profession, Zandile Nkosi, said it was important to show the elderly love.

“My purpose for hosting this lunch was to make them feel that they were special and there was no better time to do that than on Mother’s Day. Although I am currently based in Johannesburg, but I grew up in this area and I wanted to do a good deed because some of them don’t get as much attention as they deserve. We also gifted them with blankets, because winter is here and they need to keep warm.”

Kunempilo Foundation member, Bongiwe Nkosi stated that they wanted to thank the elderly for raising them.

“In African culture, we believe that a child is raised by the whole village, we are not Nkosi children, but we are children of the community. We are free today because of the women who took part in the fight for the liberation of our people. What we are doing here today comes from deep in our hearts.”

The Foundation has initiated other community projects, including giving Christmas hampers to 10 families at Christmas time. Founder Zandile Nkosi said her biggest wish is to open an orphanage for HIV infected children, and appealed to businesses to help her in uplifting the community.
