Outreach gets clean bill of health

The highlight of the programme was the ear screening, which was a first for the IMA branch

The Ladysmith branch of the Islamic Medical Association (IMA) recently undertook an outreach programme at Ikhaya Lethu Midlands Orphanage & Care Centre in Colenso. The programme was in conjunction with the Operation Sukuma Sakhe cabinet, as well as learners and staff at the Islamic Educational Centre (IEC).

The team was given a warm welcome by Centre Manager, Mr Robson. As part of their community initiative, IEC learners assisted by distributing snack hampers to the large crowd of children, who each patiently awaited their turn. The learners were accompanied by teacher, Mr AA Moola.

Other IEC educators joined in later by bringing a fresh lunch for the children. The medical team consisted of optometrists, dentists, doctors, occupational therapists and a urologist from the IMA. There were various health screenings and fortunately no teeth extractions needed to be done. Arrangements for those requiring fillings were made. A few minor visual defects were corrected with readers, while a few cases required referral for specialised attention.

The highlight of the programme was the ear screening, which was a first for the IMA branch. The ear, nose & throat and audiology teams combined their efforts to provide this service. A total of 89 residents were screened.

The IMA would like to thank all those who made the event possible, especially those who sacrificed their time for a noble cause.
