Policeman faces charges of attempted murder
The officer, according to sources, shot himself in the foot and was then given a sound beating.
A police officer, currently recovering in a local hospital under armed guard, faces charges of attempted murder after he allegedly opened fire inside a minibus taxi while under the influence of alcohol on March 2.
“It is alleged that on March 2 at 6.30am, an argument broke out inside a minibus taxi on N11 freeway near the Airport Industrial and a shot went off,” said Captain Nqobile Gwala, the spokesperson for KwaZulu-Natal Media Centre SAPS Corporate Communications.
The officer, according to sources, shot himself in the foot and was given a sound beating which landed him in a hospital bed.
“A case of attempted murder was opened at Newcastle Police Station and a 38-year-old suspect was arrested. He is appearing in the Newcastle Magistrates Court today [March 3],” added Capt Gwala.
However, attempts to gather more information on the court case were unsuccessful, as there appeared to be no case of this nature registered on the Newcastle Magistrates Court’s roll. Inquiries posed to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) were later addressed in a media statement.
“Investigations into the matter are not yet complete; hence the matter was not placed on the court roll due to outstanding evidence. Once all evidence is collected and finalised, the matter will be taken back to court for consideration,” said Acting National Spokesperson for IPID, Sontaga Seisa.
Numerous efforts have been made to obtain the policeman’s contact details to offer him an opportunity to respond, but were unsuccessful.
“The officer is in a serious condition and will not be receiving calls. We are not allowed to give out information,” said one of the officials, when asked for the policeman’s number.
