Cuban doctors visit schools around Ladysmith KZN

The schools were found to be battling with water challenges

Cuban doctors were among the stakeholders who visited schools around Ladysmith to do an oversight on functionality as schools re-opened on Monday (June 8).

Members of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, led by Nhlakanipho Ntombela, were part of the team that visited schools on Tuesday (June 9). They worked jointly with uThukela District Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko; Alfred Duma Deputy Mayor Thuli Hadebe; the Department of Health; Department of Social Development; Department of Public Works; SAPS; Department of Community Safety & Liaison; KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs; and SADTU.

Endakane High School, Steadville High School, Mnambithi Primary School, Mancanakazana Primary School and kwaMthandi Primary School were among the schools visited by the Cuban doctors to assess health conditions.

“Water challenges was the common factor at almost every school visited, with the exception of  kwaMthandi Primary School. The thermometers that schools use to scan a person’s temperature are not working properly at all the schools visited. Another concern is that only one person does the scanning, which delays the starting time for lessons,” commented uThukela communications manager Jabulani Mkhonza.

Mkhonza continued that, “Challenges with ablution facilities were also common. There was a general complaint from the side of educators that they were not trained to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic. But this issue was promised to be addressed.”
