Serving the elderly on pension pay-out days

"We are aware that the elderly have underlying health issues and they wait in long queues for hours, without food, to receive their grants"

The snaking queues in the central business district last week signalled that it was the start of social grant pay-outs.

Many grant recipients wait outside pay-points from the early hours of the morning and endure a long day in a queue.

Hot tea is served to the senior citizens while they wait to receive their grants.

Last week Wednesday and Thursday, a group of local youth decided to bring some relief to the grant recipients at the Estcourt post office.

Oranges also being distributed.

These two days were designated for old-age pensions and most of the seniors are frail, many with walking aids. A team – consisting of representatives from the local and district municipalities, Afri Pioneers and the Men’s Sector – distributed bread, tea and fruit to hundreds of senior citizens who were waiting in line.

The volunteers serve the elderly at the post office.

“We are aware that the elderly have underlying health issues and they wait in long queues for hours, without food, to receive their grants,” said one of the representatives, Bongumusa Mnguni.

He added that this gesture was a good kick-start to Youth Month.
