2020 was a year fraught with challenges. Faced with a global pandemic, which resulted in a nationwide lockdown and was followed by hundreds of deaths, 2020 has been described as an extraordinary year. On the news front, Covid-19 dominated headlines during the first half of the year.
Here’s a look at some of the top news stories for 2020.
Teams of law enforcement officers were stationed at all entry points in town in April when a complete lockdown was enforced in Estcourt. Restriction of movement was being enforced and anyone found in the central business district (CBD) without a valid reason is being sent back home.
The Estcourt Correctional Services Centre was identified as Covid-19 quarantine site for inmates imprisoned in KwaZulu-Natal. A delegation from the department met on site in May to inspect and declare the centre a quarantine site.

In July, after a prolonged lockdown on the tourism sector, dozens of employers, employees and supporters gathered along the R74 from Winterton to Bergville to form a human chain in protest of the current lockdown regulations, calling on government to open up the sector.
In October a traffic officer from the RTI Midway was gunned down while travelling on the Rensburg Road. The man died on scene after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. His young child, who was in the vehicle with him at the time, also succumbed to injuries and died in hospital.
15 people were killed after two trucks and a taxi collided near Midway on the N3 at the beginning of November. It was reported that the vehicles were travelling on the northbound and collided under the bridge.

Just a few days before Christmas, a building fire broke out in Albert Street, gutting a row of shops. Combined efforts from emergency personnel helped to contain the fire before it spread to other businesses.
