Ladysmith KZN – Best hangover cures for the festive season

If you're hungover, eat a healthy breakfast, stay hydrated or 'hit the sack' to sleep it off

Now even in a lockdown, we can still party! Popping the cork or unscrewing the bottle lid is what a lot of us do on New Year’s Eve, but the consumption of alcohol in large quantities comes with its price – a hangover.

Yes, you know how it feels: fatigue, headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst and sensitivity to light or sound. While there’s no shortage of hangover cures, from chugging a glass of pickle juice to consuming even more alcohol, very few of them are backed by health experts. Here are some remedies you might want to try…

Having a good breakfast

Eating a healthy breakfast is one of the most well-known and recommended remedies for a hangover. A good breakfast helps to maintain your blood sugar levels; having lower blood sugar levels contributes to some of the hangover symptoms such as fatigue and vomiting.

Get plenty of sleep

Alcohol consumption can cause sleep disturbances associated with decreased sleep quality and duration for some individuals .The body needs plenty of sleep in order to operate. Sleeping patterns are disrupted and the lack of sleep can make your hangover much worse.

Stay hydrated

Increasing your water intake may help alleviate some symptoms of hangovers and even prevent them altogether. Make sure you stay dehydrated throughout the day, and avoid alcohol intake when you are thirsty.
