NEWCASTLE KZN: Residents cautioned after two arrests for consumption of liquor

While on patrol near Manzana, police officials noticed a person consuming alcohol in public.

Two people have been arrested for the public consumption of alcohol recently, and have appeared in court for contravening the Disaster Management Act in terms of the national lockdown.

According to the SAPS Corporate Communications office, during an intelligence driven operation in the Osizweni area this month which focused on drugs, members on patrol in the Manzana area noticed a resident consuming alcohol near a store in the area.

“The suspect was arrested for… contravening Act 1 Section 44 Subsection 2, read with Regulation 47 (2) of the Disaster Management Act of 2020,” said Lizzy Arumugam from Corporate Communications.

On the same day as the above incident, another arrest was made in the Osizweni area for the same offence.

“Two suspects, aged 26 and 29 years old, both [appeared] in the Madadeni Magistrates Court.”
