DUNDEE KZN: Steps take against street trader who set up home on pavement

Mayor Mdluli has said that 'stringent measures' will be taken to clean up 'Ward by Ward'

After months of public complaints, the municipality has finally taken steps against a street trader who set up his shop and home on the corner of Willson and Beaconsfield streets.

The foreign national had earlier been issued with an official warning to vacate the pavement from where he sold an array of traditional plants and roots.

He had used a nearby tree to store many wooden pallets, upon which he displayed the medicinal plants. Dubbed the ‘Tree-house House’, the spot was a source of much hilarity among passersby.
Sleeping quarters had been set up in a tent that was sprawled across the pavement. Traffic officials moved in to evict him and remove the pallets from the tree.

Mayor Mdluli has said that ‘stringent measures’ will be taken to clean up ‘Ward by Ward’ – with the campaign including intensive checks for illegal meter tampering and the maintenance of streetlights and roads. He has also suggested that the former Commando building, behind the municipality, be considered as a ‘Hawkers Market’ to allow for more control.
