NEWCASTLE KZN: Winter is coming… here’s why you need to save water
DWS is anticipating that the dry winter season will have a major impact on water levels.
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) in KwaZulu-Natal has called on residents to use water sparingly as the winter season approaches.
This comes after the weekly status of dams reports showed a marginal increase from last week’s 72.1% to 72.4% this week.
“We are urging residents to use water prudently as we are anticipating that the dry winter season will have a major impact on water levels,” explained DWS Spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau.
He added that some districts are currently still experiencing the effects of drought, which was a major concern for the Department.
“These districts include the Amajuba, Zululand, Uthukela, Umzinyathi, Uthungulu and Umgungundlovu areas. The Department has several ongoing short, medium and long-term interventions designed to mitigate drought effects in those districts,” commented Ratau.
One of these short-term measures, he said, was to ensure water tanks the Department provided this time last year, is always filled up with water to enable communities who continue to experience inconsistent water supply, to have water.
