NEWCASTLE KZN: Why you should consider boarding your pets during holidays
According to the SPCA, it is wiser and safer to board your pet with a dedicated, professional boarding kennel when you go away.
Most holidays need careful planning and this includes making plans for the care and well-being of your animals.
“Don’t leave it for the last minute,” cautioned Heather Gero of the Newcastle SPCA.
She said that all pets need to be cared for when you go away, even if it’s for the shortest time.
“That includes your fish, hamster, mice or birds. No-one can replace you in your pet’s life, but at times ‘kennelling’ is the next best thing…”
Do you really know what happens to your pet when you go away?

Gero said that dogs and cats are not necessarily as happy or safe as their owners think when they are left at home or with a stranger.
“It is also good to remember very few dogs are actually trained to be watch dogs, so it is not fair to expect them to ‘police’ the property all on their own. A well-meaning neighbour, domestic worker, friend or family member may not have the trained supervision that you, the owner, may have and pets frequently run away or can become ill due to this,” she explained.
Other dangers, she added, included those of your pet not being fed correctly or being neglected, pining for their owner or straying through gates being left open or even worse, being run over.

“It is far wiser and safer to board your pet with a dedicated, professional boarding kennel where they will receive lots of love, attention and care.”
At the Newcastle SPCA, staff will be able to offer your pet a safe and loving home away from home, while also giving the owner peace of mind.
