NEWCASTLE KZN: AfriForum Youth helps Volksrust community clean up cemetery

Some of the tombstones in the cemetery date back to 1851.

On April 10, AfriForum Youth members assisted in Volksrust to help clean up the local cemetery.

According to Petri van der Walt, AfriForum Youth’s National Coordinator for Town Structures, this came after community members approached the youth organisation for assistance.

“Five new slashers [grass-cutting machines] were purchased with which to tackle this project,” confirmed van der Walt.

She alleged the problem originated after the local municipality stopped all maintenance at the cemetery.

“The community had had enough and wanted to do something about it. On April 10, both young and old entered the cemetery and started with the clean-up. Even local businesses offered their help on the day,” she confirmed.

Van der Walt explained that some of the tombstones in the cemetery date back to 1851 and there is also a wall of remembrance at the site.

“There will again be an opportunity to continue to clean up the cemetery in May,” she added, saying talks are currently being held to establish an AfriForum Youth branch in the community so the youth can become more involved in such projects which need to be tackled in the town.

“It is nice for me to see a community co-operating so well and taking responsibility themselves as far as the clean-up of the environment is concerned,” she concluded.

She urged those who want to become involved and help make a difference, to send an email to her on petri.vanderwalt@afriforum.co.za.
