DUNDEE KZN: Effluent leaks are ‘widespread’

The inspection discovered that sewage is leaking into the streams and will have to be attended to.

Ongoing sewage leaks in the area have prompted Department of Water & Sanitation officials to undertake an in-loco inspection of so-called hot-spots.

They were called to the area by the Endumeni Residents’ Association (ERA) and the Civic Association. The first stop was Sithembile, Glencoe, where a leaking pump station has for years now polluted a stream that flows through nearby farmland and the township area. The officials were shown around by FC Bester of the ERA and Mzwakhe Sithebe of the Civic Association.

The officials were both surprised and shocked to discover the effluent running adjacent to homes. “The leak is also affecting the nearby Donald McHardy Dam,” said Mr Bester. Samples will have to be taken to ascertain the extent of the pollution

.There was also a visit to the Steenkoolspruit, the pollution of which the Courier has covered extensively. Residents in Peacevale, through which the stream flows, reported a foul smell emanating from the river last week. The inspection discovered that sewage is leaking into the stream and will have to be attended to. See this weeks Courier, out on Thursday, May 20. 2021, for the full details.
