Rafferty murders: trial to begin in October

Read the full report in the regional Northern Natal News this week (January 28).

Three suspects linked to the Rafferty murders will go on trial in October.

Siyabonga Macu, Doctor Ngwenya and Sibongiseni Madondo (accused 1, 2 and 4 respectively) appeared in the Madadeni High Court on January 17. The matter was postponed to October 31 where trial proceedings are expected to begin.

The third accused, Sizwe Zwane pleaded guilty to multiple counts in the Pietermaritzburg High Court last March. A fifth suspect, Khulekani Mbongwa was killed in a drug-related incident on December 3 last year.

The KwaZulu-Natal Organised Crime Task Team is confident about a breakthrough in pursuing the sixth and final suspect, who remains at large.

Glen and Vida Rafferty were killed after arriving home at their farm on the night of August 29, 2020. The murders sparked outcry from the community at large and even resulted in protest action outside the Newcastle Magistrates Court.
