The third annual ‘Mr & Miss AbaQulusi’ pageant took place at the Cecil Emmet Hall recently. The pageant saw young girls and boys showing off their modelling talents on the catwalk. This event is organised by Ms Nana Khumalo (MaMthethwa) every year as a way of reviving talent and keeping the young ones off the streets.
Khumalo, who was a pageant winner in her youth, commented that, “Looking back when we were growing up, we used to have beauty contests and Ellerines was one of stores that sponsored. Today, I am continuing with this journey. One day, I would love to see one of our own girls or boys taking part in Miss South Africa and abroad. Beauty contests aren’t the same as they used to be. Most people end up owning their own businesses; pageants actually pave the way to a better future. We are currently facing a big challenge in our society, with young people taking drugs. In this way, I’m trying to show these young people that there are many opportunities for them, so they should stand up and take part in activities they can benefit from in the future.”
Khumalo would like to thank all the sponsors who helped make the day a huge success; the participants and parents for availing themselves; as well as the judges. She pleads with business people and municipalities to also play a role in assisting these children, as it takes a village to raise children with positive mindsets.’’
