Prayer service held after deadly R34 crashes spark concern

Zululand communities pray for safer R34 roads after multiple fatal accidents spark alarm.

Tragic accidents have become an all-too-common occurrence along the R34 route between Melmoth and Dundee, particularly at Lakeside Crossing and the Junction. These crashes contribute significantly to the rising death toll in the Zululand District.

In an effort to address the crisis, Zululand District Municipality – in collaboration with AbaQulusi Local Municipality – hosted a special prayer service on Thursday at the Cecil Emmet Hall. The event brought together bishops, pastors and intercessors, united in prayer for safer roads and fewer accidents.

The service began with prayers in key danger zones, starting on the R34 towards Melmoth, then continuing in the direction of Dundee. The programme concluded at the Cecil Emmet Hall, where the community gathered for worship, motivational messages and continued intercession. Renowned gospel artist Ayanda Ntanzi graced the event with his presence, leading the congregation in a powerful session of worship.

Despite the spiritual success of the gathering, residents voiced ongoing concerns about the state of road infrastructure. Many took to social media to highlight that poor road conditions – particularly potholes – are a major contributor to accidents.

Others emphasised the need for responsible driving, calling on motorists to exercise patience and caution.
While some attendees expressed frustration with infrastructure challenges, many were grateful for the initiative, hopeful that the combined efforts of prayer, awareness and accountability will bring about positive change.
