Three arrested in Umzinyathi area following crackdown on illegal firearms
Three suspects were arrested in Nquthu and Msinga during an intelligence-driven police operation aimed at curbing the spread of illegal firearms.
A joint operation between Umzinyathi District Crime Intelligence and Newcastle Public Order Policing (POP) has led to the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of illegal firearms in Nquthu and Msinga.
Acting on intelligence, officers swooped on two homesteads in KwaNqulu, Nquthu, during the early hours of May 20. At the first location, a 47-year-old man was found in possession of an unlicensed pistol and ammunition. A second suspect, aged 52, was nabbed shortly afterwards in a similar bust nearby.
Meanwhile, in Keates Drift, Msinga Crime Prevention Unit members arrested a third suspect, 54, during routine stop-and-search duties. He was also allegedly found with an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
All recovered weapons will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in the commission of other crimes.
The suspects are due to appear in the Nquthu and Msinga Magistrates’ Courts soon.
Umzinyathi District Commissioner, Major General Francis Slambert, praised the officers for their swift action.
“The removal of illegal firearms from our communities is a critical step in ensuring the safety and security of our citizens. I applaud the collaborative efforts that led to these arrests and commend the commitment of our members,” she said.
