Elderly woman’s crumbling house repaired by Glencoe SAPS and volunteers team

SAPS and CPF volunteers go beyond crime-fighting, uplifting struggling family in true Ubuntu spirit.

A 90-year-old grandmother from Mantshontshombeni, Glencoe, received a lifeline last week when members of the SAPS and the local community came together to improve her dire living conditions.
On Wednesday and Thursday last week, Glencoe SAPS – in collaboration with the Community Policing Forum (CPF), Youth Desk, street patrollers and the Department of Health – responded to the plight of the elderly woman who shares a crumbling home with her four young grandchildren.

The family’s only source of income is the elderly woman’s old age grant. They were found living in a house with broken windows, cracked walls and an unstable floor. To make matters worse, they had no food when help arrived.

Moved by their situation, the team rolled up their sleeves and got to work – cleaning the house; fixing broken windows and doors; painting the interior; and donating warm clothes, groceries and other essentials to the family.

The initiative, described by many as a true act of Ubuntu, highlights how the police and local partners continue to show their commitment to not only fighting crime but also uplifting vulnerable members of society.
“This is what building a caring and safer community is truly about,” said Lloyd Kgotshane of the Glencoe CPF.
Glencoe SAPS was praised for going beyond the call of duty and partnering up with the community to restore dignity to a family in need.
